Bitcoin Dev Hides Image in TX, Exposing Governance 'Spam' Blind Spot
A Bitcoin developer, Martin Habovštiak, demonstrated a potential vulnerability by embedding a 66KB image within a single transaction, without utilizing OP_RETURN or Taproot. This was done to highlight that restricting one data entry point doesn't eliminate the possibility of embedding data, but merely shifts the method. This demonstration occurs amidst ongoing debates within the Bitcoin community regarding stricter filters to prevent blockchain "spam." Some argue that stringent restrictions may lead to less desirable practices and favor larger miners. Habovštiak's experiment suggests that filtering efforts may redirect rather than prevent unwanted data. The experiment highlights the distinction between consensus rules and policy rules within the Bitcoin network, emphasizing that miners' economic incentives can override policy.
