Ethereum (ETH) Fees Drop $100M as Layer-2s Retain Profits After Dencun Upgrade

In 2025, Ethereum experienced a significant shift in its financial dynamics, with fee revenue dropping by over $100 million. Despite a strong operational year marked by record transaction volumes, the price of ETH has not mirrored this growth, declining 10% year-to-date. This divergence is attributed to technical upgrades, particularly the “Dencun” upgrade, which lowered transaction costs but also reduced revenue from Layer-2 networks. These networks, which previously contributed significantly to Ethereum's fee revenue, retained a larger portion of their earnings, impacting Ethereum's overall financial profile. The changes have also led to an increase in Ethereum's inflation rate.
